When Kay and Resten contacted us about photographing their Missouri backyard wedding in October, I think we said yes before they could finish asking. Backyard weddings are kind of our thing, and I (Katie) have a connection to Kay’s family that goes way back. Kay’s older sister Julia and I have been friends for over 20 years, so spending the day with their family, and getting to know Resten and his family seemed like an obvious YES!
These two met while residents in the the ICU of a New Jersey hospital. They clearly are a perfect match for each other, and their October wedding day was beautiful. Their ceremony was held at the Saint Anselm parish at the St. Louis Abbey. Kay initially described the church to us as, “You know, that one that looks like a wedding cake”. I was confused at first, but then I saw it. Her description was spot on. The architecture of this church has modern lines and a mid-century feel. The large arched windows also provided tons of natural light.
Here are a few of our favorite photos from Kay and Resten’s October wedding in St. Louis. Scroll down for more details below the images!

After their ceremony at the “wedding cake” church, everyone headed back to Kay’s parents house for a backyard reception under the stars. Kay has eight brothers and sisters, and one of my favorite photos from the wedding was the silly faces picture we did with her entire immediate family and her nieces and nephews. One of the reasons Kay and Resten decided to have a backyard reception was the ease of family members being able to bring their kids to celebrate. Kay’s parents set up pack and plays next to the tent, and the kids had a great time playing with toys in the yard!
One of the most memorable moments from the reception was when Resten, who’s family is from Hawaii, performed a Hawaiian custom with leis. After a speech, he gifted his mother, his new mother-in-law and Kay fresh leis. They were so beautiful and vibrant. I wish more of our weddings included leis!
Since Kay comes from such a big family, it’s no surprise that this wedding had more kids in attendance than any other we’ve photographed before. Kay had the genius idea to bring out a box of “surprises” when the dancing started. She had purchased glow rings, glowing hair barrettes, light flashing bracelets, asnd a few whoopie cushions… and the kids (and adults!) went nuts. It was an entertaining reception to say the least, and we found countless photo opportunities throughout the night.
Thanks so much to Kay and Resten for trusting us to document the memories of such an incredible day. We had a wonderful time with you guys and all of the family and wish you all the best in the years to come!
